Frequently Asked Questions

General

Q: What are you referring to when you say "GBLTQ"?

A: The acronym itself means gay-bisexual-lesbian-transgendered/transsexual-queer/questioning(depending on who you ask), but on this site we use it to refer to all persons who are often descriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. This includes two-spirited individuals, Intersexed individuals, and Pan-sexual individuals, even though they are not expressly mentioned in the acronym. If your identity has not been mentioned and you are wondering whether we are standing up for your rights as well, please send us a quick email. We're not intentionally trying to exclude anyone.

Q: What is meant by your new "broader focus"?

A: It means we're now committed to furthering GBLTQ rights in more arenas than just same-sex marriage. In particular, but not limited to: support for GBLTQ youth, HIV/AIDS prevention/awareness, Trans rights, and encouraging work for GBLTQ rights internationally.

Chapters:

Q: If we start a chapter, do we have to run sewing bees to make the banner longer?

A: No, you are not required to run sewing bees. If you would like to, that is greatly encouraged, but it is not a problem if you don't want to make your banner section longer.

Q: Do we have to organize our own rallies and events?

A: No, you can simply attend events run by other groups, or supply the banner for use at the event. Of course if you want to organize your own events that's wonderful!

Q:Do we have to be Unitarian Universalist to run a chapter?

A:No, of course not. Anyone who wants to support the project by running a chapter is welcome to do so.

Q:If I am an adult, can I run a chapter?

A:Yes, of course! We are a youth based organization(our exectuive committee is all youth), but we enourage groups of youth and adults to work together to form chapters. The first phase of our project was very focussed on youth participation, but now we would very much like to see mixed youth and adult groups. Of course if an adult group were to try to exclude youth from participation that would be unacceptable. But likewise a chapter run by youth exculding adult is also not acceptable.

Q: What if more than one group in a region wants to run a chapter?

A: If that is the case we may split that region's section in to two smaller sections, or if one of the groups is interested in having sewing bees and making their own section that is also a possibility.

Q: What if I want to start a chapter but there is already one in my region?

A: Please contact us and we'll discuss the options with your group and the existing chapter to see what works best for everyone. Please dont feel you can't get involved because there is already a chapter in your region!

Q: If I want to start a chapter in the US or in another country, is that alright?

A: Yes it is, however right now we are still focussing on Canada, so we may encourage you to build your own banner section so the ones we already have can be used in canada. If you would like to start a chapter outside of Canada please contact us directly and we'll dicuss how we can best support your work. In fact there are already a couple of youth groups running a parallel project in the United States, so if you're in the US you might want to contact them. Please see the Chapters page for more details about the American Project.
